n partnership with Startale Labs, a Singapore-based company, Sony announced Soneium, an Ethereum layer 2 blockchain created to entice developers from various sectors (entertainment, gaming, finance, etc.).

This initiative is led by Sony Block Solutions Labs. Their goal is to take Web3 technologies mainstream within applications, essentially expanding blockchain capabilities.

According to a joint statement by the two companies, the Soneium testnet has been launched in collaboration with Astar Network, providing the infrastructure needed for development.

Sony's Mainstream Integration Goal & Broader Web3 Perspective

Sony's interest in Web3 isn’t a surprise, as the company has tried many different Web3 technologies over the years. For example, the PlayStation game division applied for a patent for a framework for NFTs to enhance the utility of in-game assets.

Sota Watanabe, director of Sony Block Solution Labs, emphasized that the goal of this initiative is to develop applications that people would use every day. Through Sony’s deep distribution channels, the goal is to move Soneium beyond the niche Web3 audience and into the mainstream.

Soneium blockchain is a step in that direction that aims to utilize blockchain beyond gaming into areas like finance and entertainment. Soneium has also partnered with companies like Optimism, Circle, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink to enhance capabilities, which is promising.

How to Get Involved

1. Step 1: Getting Sepolia Testnet $ETH

The most important part first; you will need Sepolia testnet $ETH.

2. Step 2: Bridging Your Tokens

Next, you will need to get your tokens moving.

You can do that through the Soneium Bridge: http://bridge.soneium.org/en/testnet, then connect your wallet and bridge your Sepolia $ETH over to the Minato Testnet.

Bridge your ETH on Soneium

You will need to bridge back and forth every week and continue to be active.

This is important because generating volume can be helpful and you'll get a better shot at potential drops.

3. Step 3: Interact with the Community

Finally, just interact with the community on X, Discord, or Telegram. When dApps launch, there will be further instructions so keep an eye out for those as well.
