A Layer 2 is a network or secondary foundation that is built on top of Layer 1 blockchains such as Ethereum or Bitcoin for example. Both Ethereum and Bitcoin can be slow, expensive and very congested. For these superior blockchains to excel and become globally adopted they will need to be able to handle higher throughput. This is where Layer 2 networks come in.
